Starting Nursery: How to Help Your Child Settle In

Practical tips to make the first days and weeks of nursery or pre-school easier for children and parents.

Starting nursery is a big change for many families. Some children settle quickly while others need more time. A gradual, consistent approach can help your child build confidence and trust in the new environment.

Visit before the first day

If your setting offers settling-in sessions, use them. Let your child see the room, meet practitioners and learn where familiar things are. Ask whether you can bring a comfort item or family photo.

Keep the goodbye simple

Long, uncertain goodbyes can make separation harder. Develop a short routine that your child can recognise, then leave confidently after saying goodbye. The nursery team can help if your child becomes upset.

Build predictable routines

Try to keep wake-up, breakfast, dressing and arrival routines similar each day. Children often feel more secure when they know what is happening next.

Expect ups and downs

A child who seems happy in the first week may become upset later as they understand the routine. Likewise, a child who finds the first few days difficult may settle rapidly. Keep talking to the setting and share anything that could help staff understand your child.
