School readiness is not about making a young child complete schoolwork before Reception. It is about helping children develop confidence, communication, independence, physical skills and the ability to take part in group routines.
Useful everyday skills
- Putting on and taking off a coat
- Using the toilet or communicating when help is needed
- Listening to a short instruction
- Opening food packaging where appropriate
- Talking to adults about needs
- Taking turns and joining play
Reading together, talking, playing and giving children opportunities to do things for themselves can all help.
