Ofsted Early Years Inspections 2026: What Parents Need to Know

Understand how to use Ofsted information when comparing early years settings, including the inspection changes being introduced from September 2026.

← All Early Years guides

Ofsted information is an important part of comparing early years providers, but it should not be the only thing you consider. Families should combine official inspection information with a visit, conversations with the setting and their own priorities.

What is changing in 2026?

Ofsted is updating its early years inspection approach from September 2026. The changes reflect updates to the EYFS and place strong emphasis on safeguarding, children’s welfare and wellbeing, alongside the wider evaluation of settings.

Should I only choose an “Outstanding” setting?

No. Inspection information is a snapshot of a setting at a particular point in time. A setting’s current staff team, environment and approach are also relevant. Use inspection information as evidence, then visit the setting and ask questions.

What should parents look for?

  • Safeguarding arrangements
  • How staff interact with children
  • Learning and development
  • Physical care and wellbeing
  • How individual needs are supported
  • Whether the setting feels welcoming and organised
