When to Talk to Someone About Your Child's Speech and Language

What parents can do if they have concerns about communication and how nursery can help identify support needs.

โ† All Early Years guides

Children develop communication skills at different rates, but if you are concerned about your child's speech, understanding or interaction, it is sensible to talk to someone rather than waiting in silence.

Start with the adults who know your child

Talk to your nursery, health visitor or GP as appropriate. They can discuss what you are noticing and whether further advice is useful.

Share examples of what your child can and cannot currently do rather than comparing them with another child.
