EYFS Mathematics: Early Number and Shape Skills

How young children develop early mathematical ideas through counting, comparison, patterns, shape and everyday play.

โ† All Early Years guides

Young children encounter mathematics throughout the day: counting objects, comparing sizes, noticing patterns, sharing food and talking about position and shape.

Simple activities

  • Count steps or toys together.
  • Compare which pile has more.
  • Sort objects by colour or size.
  • Spot shapes around the home.
  • Make simple repeating patterns.

Good early maths is often playful and practical rather than worksheet-based.
